Marquette University History. Milwaukee’s first Catholic bishop, the Most Rev. Martin J. Henni, had a dream in the mid–1850s of creating an academy of learning. Embarking on a trip overseas to find an investor, Bishop Henni met Belgian businessman Guillaume Joseph DeBuey, who promised $16,000, which was just enough to keep his dream alive for the next eight years. At that time, he was able to purchase a parcel of land on a hilltop that today stands at North 10th and West State Streets. Nearly three decades would pass before the doors of Marquette College, a small liberal arts school for men named after Father Jacques Marquette, opened on Aug. 28, 1881. Bishop Henni died just two days later. For admissions and information, visit www.marquette.edu/about/history.
